What is software? Software is a program (set of instructions) executed by hardware.
What are the two basic types of software? System Software and Application Software.
What is system software? System software controls the hardware, supports application software, and manages system operation and maintenance.
What are three types of system software? Operating systems, utility programs, and programming language translators.
What is an operating system? A collection of software that manages hardware resources and provides services for computer programs.
Name 5 functions of an operating system. User interface, Process management, Memory management, Security management, File management.
What are examples of operating systems? Windows, Android, iOS, Linux, MacOS.
What is utility software? Specialized programs that maintain and improve a computer system’s efficiency.
What does a backup utility do? Creates a spare copy of data for protection against loss or corruption.
What does a disk defragmenter do? Organizes files to speed up data access.
What is the function of a disk error checker? Scans and repairs errors on a hard disk.
What does disk cleanup do? Removes unnecessary files to free up space.
What is the function of antivirus software? Detects, removes, and prevents computer viruses.
What are the three types of translators? Assembler, Compiler, Interpreter.
What is application software? Software that performs tasks for the user, like writing documents or managing data.
What is general-purpose application software? Software used for a wide range of tasks, like word processors and spreadsheets.
What is special-purpose application software? Software for narrowly focused tasks, like photo editing or media playback.
What is customized software? General-purpose software modified for specific user needs.
What is integrated package software? A package combining related programs, like Microsoft Office.
What is off-the-shelf software? Ready-made software available for immediate purchase and use.
What are the advantages of off-the-shelf software? High availability, technical support, and easy access.
What is customized software (source)? Software tailored to a user’s preferences or needs using add-ons or modules.
What is custom-written software? Software developed from scratch to meet an organization’s specific needs.
What is SaaS (Software as a Service)? A software delivery method where apps are hosted online and accessed via subscription.
Name two advantages of SaaS. Greater accessibility and lower short-term costs for small businesses.
What is a word processor used for? To create and edit text and graphics in letters and web pages.
Give three examples of word processing software. Google Docs, Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer.
What is a spreadsheet used for? To perform calculations, analyze information, manage lists, and create charts.
Give three examples of spreadsheet software. Microsoft Excel, Numbers, LibreOffice Calc.
What is a database used for? To create and link tables to manage and store records.
Give three examples of database software. Microsoft Access, FileMaker, LibreOffice Base.
What is web page design software used for? To create websites.
Give two examples of web page design software. Adobe Dreamweaver, Google Web Designer.
What is a web browser used for? To request, retrieve, and display web pages.
Name four popular web browsers. Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari.
What is photo-editing software used for? To enhance or modify photographs.
Give three examples of photo-editing software. Adobe Photoshop, Apple Photos, Microsoft Photo.
What is a media player used for? To view videos and listen to music.
Name two media players. QuickTime by Apple, Microsoft Groove.
What is the difference between general-purpose and special-purpose application software? General-purpose performs a wide range of tasks; special-purpose is designed for specific tasks.
