What was the main goal of the Truman Doctrine? To help any nation resisting communism by providing military, financial, and political support.
What did the Truman Doctrine aim to prevent? The spread of communism (containment), but it allowed it to exist where it already was.
What theory justified the Truman Doctrine? The Domino Theory – if one country falls to communism, others nearby will follow.
What was the Marshall Plan? A U.S. aid program to rebuild European economies after WWII and prevent the spread of communism.
How did the Marshall Plan affect U.S. foreign policy? Marked a shift from isolationism to a more active global role.
What was McCarthyism also known as? The Second Red Scare
Who was Joseph McCarthy? A young senator who led efforts to expose alleged communists in the U.S. during the late 1940s and 1950s.
Who were targeted during McCarthy's investigations? Government officials, academics, and Hollywood figures.
What was the result for those accused by McCarthy? They were blacklisted and often unable to find work.
Why did Truman allow McCarthyism to continue? He feared being seen as "soft on communism."
What led to McCarthy losing credibility? He wrongly accused respected individuals without solid proof.
What emotion defined the Cold War era in the U.S.? Constant fear and anxiety of nuclear war.
How did the space race impact education? It promoted math and science in schools.
What new safety measures were practiced by schoolchildren? Nuclear attack drills.
How did pop culture reflect Cold War themes? Through pro-American and anti-communist movies, TV, and books.
How was education used as propaganda? Schools promoted democracy and anti-communism.
How did Cold War ideals affect civil rights? The contradiction of promoting democracy abroad while denying rights at home fueled the Civil Rights Movement.
What are examples of civil rights actions during the Cold War? Freedom Rides, Little Rock Nine, Brown v. Board of Education.
