TermDefinition
Transcontinental railroad huge like the internet is for this generation. The transcontinental railroad increased communication, lowered the cost of goods because of the ability to transport, increased the sale of goods.
Bessemer Process the process of turning iron into steel. The BIG IDEA is that steel is needed for industrialization and urbanization.
Rokefeller Robber Barron who controlled the oil industry. He ran Standard Oil which was a monopoly. The BIG IDEA is that the huge monopoly that influenced the government. Eventually the government broke it up.
Sherman Anti-Trust Act Government created it to break apart trusts and monopolies that hurt competition. It was not an effective law, but the BIG IDEA was it was the first time the government decided to get involved in regulating business.
Spanish American War It was a war in 1898 where we acquired Puerto Rico, Guam, the philippines, and control of Cuba. The BID IDEA was that it is when the U.S. becomes a world power.
Panama Canal/Hawaii/Alaska/Alfred Mahan around the same time as the spanish american war, any question that has these will be about the U.S. becoming a WORLD power through naval strength (imperialism)
Industrialization, Immigration and urbanization Big deal, made the U.S. the industrial power it is. Timing-Land, immigration, very little government regulations, some get very rich at the cost of others.
Electricity Allows factories to move away and not be dependent on water power and it allowed factories to stay open longer.
Muckrakers Reporters in the progressive era that impacted government regulations and reform. Upton Sinclair wrote "The Jungle" which lead T Roosevelt to pass the Meat Inspecting Act and the Pure food and drug act.
Progressivism Moving from social darwinism to to social gospel/ reforming the issues caused by the Gilded age/ allowing more people to participate in the democratic process.
19th amendment Women's suffrage(susan b anthony, seneca falls convention)
Militarism/Alliances/imperialism causes of WW1 in Europe- mostly the alliances,
League of nations Founded after WW1, part of Wilson's 14 points, BID DEAL is that the U.S. and Russia did not join and it was unable to prevent WW2 (U.S. did not want to join because of isolationism)
Red scare/McCarthyism after each war both were fear of Communism and the BIG DEAL is that Nativism led to immigration restriction and civil rights violations
Tea Pot dome scandal and watergate 2 HUGE government scandals
18th and 21st amendment prohibition
14th amendment equal protection under the law-is used in almost all civil rights supreme court cases
Internment of Japanese American violation of Japanese Americans 4th and 14th amendments
Civil rights act of 1964 no discrimination in the work place(johnson)
Civil Rights act of 1965 No poll tax(johnson)
