Define nazism National Socialism, the political belief of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party based on aggressive expansion of German lands and the superiority of the Aryan race
What was the USSR? The former Russian empire before it became a communist state in the 1920s
Define superpower? A country in a dominant international position that is able to influence events
What was the term "Iron curtain" Term used by Churchill in 1946 to describe the separation of eastern and western Europe into communist and non communist blocs
Define "Comniform" Organisation to spread communist ideas and also make sure communist states followed ideas of communism practised in USSR
What was the marshall plan? The plan behind marshall aid. Although it was an economic programme, it was also political. Some commentators argued that it was an economic form of imperialism designed to allow the USA to dominate western Europe.
Define capitalism? Political, social, and economic system centered on democracy and individual freedoms such as free speech, political beliefs and freedom to do buisness.
Define communism? Political, social, and economic system involving state control of economy and less emphasis on individual rights than capitalism
Define dictatorship? System in which one person runs a country.
Define appeasement? French/British policy in 1930s allowing Hitler to break terms of TOV
Define "soviet sphere of influence"? Agreed at the Yalta conference -- Western powers agreed that Poland and other parts of EE would be under soviet influence
Define "iron curtain?" Repeat so skip
Who were the "secret police"? Police force specialising in dealing with threats to the state e.g. political opponents rather than normal crimes
