Reconstruction Vocabulary

reconstruction to rebuild what was damaged or destroyed
tenant Farmer a farmer who does not own the land
sharecropper a farmer who gives up part of the crop as rent
segregation separation of people by race
debt slavery being forced to work to pay off loans, also known as peonage
poll tax a tax payment required in order to vote
literacy the ability to read and write
reform to make changes in order to improve something
discrimination to treat people differently based on race, religion, age, or gender
lynching when a mob kills someone without a trial, usually by hanging
systemic inequity unfairness built into the system of government and society
