Shock
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| shock | body's cells aren't getting enough oxygen and nutrients both blood and circulation problems |
| heart (pump) | needs to be strong |
| vessels (pipes) | need to be the right size |
| blood (fluid) | need enough of it |
| you get shock | if any part of this triangle fails |
| cardiogenic | heart's too weak to pump (pump failure) -> heart attacks |
| obstructive | something's blocking blood flow (clot, collapsed lung) -. blocked pipes |
| distributive | vessels get too wide, BP drops -> leaky pipes |
| distributive shock include | septic (infection) - neurogenic - spinal injury - anaphylactic (allergic reaction) - psychogenic (fainting) |
| hypovolemic | not enough blood volume (bleeding, burns, dehydration) ->not enough fluid |
| early signs | tachycardia pale, cool, clammy skin confusion, anxiety |
| late signs | hypotension - especially dangerous in kids |
| treatment (always do) | O2, stop bleeding, keep warm, lay flat, transport |
| specific treatment | anaphylaxis: epinephrine |
| older people | shock can be harder to spot -> treat aggressively (even if signs are subtle) |
