Who did the US sign a treaty with to acquire Oregon? Britian
Who was in the "Five Civilized Tribes"? Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Choctaw, and Chickasaw
What did the Indian Removal Act allow? The federal gov't to pay Native American to move west off their ancestral land to "Indian Territory"
Where did most of the support for the Indian Removal Act? Southern democrats (farmers), but the bill was conservetional
How did the Native Americans act? Acceptance, fighting via war, and fighting via court.
Which tribe fought via court? Cherokee took case to supreme court, they ruled in their favor, but Jackson ignored that and forcefully removed them creating the trail of tears.
Which tribe fought via war? Seminole, they were successful and kept some of their land
What is the estimate number of natives relocated west? 50,000
Manifest Destiny? The belief that the United States was destined by God to expand west to the Pacific ocean.
Who were the first Americans in Oregon? Fur Traders
What was Oregon Fever? The mass migration of thousands of Americans to Oregon
Approximately how long was the Oregon Trail? 2000 miles long
How many settlers died along the way (disease, starvation, accidents.)? 1 in 10 settlers
What happen to the Whitmans? They unknowingly brought measles with them killing almost half of the Cayuse Native Americans
What line of latitude did the US and the British set their border to? 49 degrees north
What did "Fifty-Four Forty or Fight" mean? The US would do anything for that land even go to war for it
