Mexican-American War a war that began in 1846, which the Americans won when they captured Mexico City in 1847 and forced Mexico to surrender
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo the treaty that ended the Mexican-American War; the United States gained 500,000 square miles of territory, the southern border was set at the Rio Grande, and the United States paid Mexico $18.25 million
Gadsden Purchase the United States' purchase of the southern part of New Mexico for $10 million
manifest destiny the belief that the United States had been "chosen" to bring democratic ideals to all land between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans
Oregon Treaty of 1846 a treaty that created a 2,175-mile-long border that split the Oregon Territory between the British in Canada and the United States
California Gold Rush the journey, beginning in 1849, that over 80,000 people (called Forty-Niners) made to California to reach the newly discovered gold fields
Pony Express a mail delivery system introduced in 1860 that used a continuous horse-and-rider relay from St. Joseph, Missouri, to California
free sail the idea that the national government had the right to keep slavery from spreading into new territories
popular sovereignty the idea that people in a new territory should be allowed to decide an issue (such as whether to allow slavery) for themselves
Compromise of 1850 laws passed in 1850 in which California was admitted to the Union as a free state, slave trading was ended in the District of Columbia, and Texas gave up its idea of annexing New Mexico
Kansas-Nebraska Act legislation introduced to organize an area into the Kansas and Nebraska Territories, which included a clause stating that the Compromise of 1850 had made popular sovereignty available to the territories
Dred Scott v. Sandford an 1857 U.S. Supreme Court decision that ruled that enslaved people could be taken to free territories by their owners and would remain enslaved
