Bill of Rights

The first 10 amendments

TermDefinition
1st Amendment Guarantees freedom of religion, speech, the press, assembly, and the right to petition the government
2nd Amendment Protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms
3rd Amendment Prevents the quartering of soldiers in private homes without the owner's consent
4th Amendment Protects against unreasonable searches and seizures, requiring warrants based on probable cause
5th Amendment Guarantees due process of law, protects against self-incrimination (pleading the fifth), and double jeopardy, and ensures just compensation for property taken for public use
6th Amendment Guarantees the right to a speedy and public trial, the right to counsel, and the right to confront witnesses in criminal prosecutions
7th Amendment Guarantees the right to a jury trial in civil cases where the value in controversy exceeds twenty dollars
8th Amendment Prohibits excessive bail and fines, and cruel and unusual punishments
9th Amendment States that the enumeration of specific rights in the Constitution does not mean that other rights retained by the people are denied
10th Amendment Reserves to the states or to the people any powers not specifically delegated to the federal government by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states
