Government

TermDefinition
Federalism a system of government where power is divided between a central (national) government and regional (state/provincial) governments, each with constitutionally defined powers, allowing for both national unity and regional autonomy
Separation of Powers a fundamental principle of government that divides governmental authority into three distinct branches: legislative, executive, and judicial, each with its own powers and responsibilities
Checks and Balances mechanisms that distribute power among different branches of government (legislative, executive, and judicial) to prevent any one branch from becoming too powerful, ensuring a balanced system of governance
Judicial Review the power of a court, especially the Supreme Court, to examine and declare a law or action by the legislative or executive branches unconstitutional, ensuring the government stays within the bounds of the Constitution
Representative Democracy type of democracy where representatives are elected by the public
Limited Government the concept of a government limited in power.
Rule of Law a fundamental principle stating that everyone, including government officials and institutions, is subject to and accountable under the law, ensuring no one is above it and that laws are applied fairly and consistently
Majority Rule the principle that the greater number should exercise greater power
Popular Sovereignty the principle that the ultimate power in a state resides in the people, who are the source of all political legitimacy
Equal Protection the idea that a governmental body may not deny people equal protection of its governing laws
