Guiding principles and goals of the constitution

Form a more perfect union - Preamble The framers of The Constitution wanted to ensure cooperation among the states, and cooperation between the states and the national government.
Establish justice - Preamble The framers hoped to create a system of government based on fair laws that apply equally to all people.
Ensure domestic tranquillity - Preamble The framers wanted the government to ensure peace and order.
Provide for the common defense - Preamble The framers wanted the government to protect the nation against foreign enemies.
Promote the general welfare - Preamble The framers hoped the government would ensure the well-being of its citizens.
Secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity - Preamble The framers hoped to guarantee freedom for Americans both at present and future times.
Popular Sovereignty - GP Power resides not with the government but within the people. We exercise this through voting in our representative democracy.
Rule of Law - GP Everybody must abide by a clear and fairly enforced set of laws.
Separation of Powers and Checks and Balances - GP Powers and responsibilities are divided among three government branches to prevent any one person or group from having too much power.
Federalism - GP Power is divided between the central government and the individual state and local governments.
Independent Judiciary - GP It is an independent entity, free of pressures and influences from the other two branches. The Supreme Court is the highest authority in the federal court system,.
Individual Rights - GP Individual Rights and liberties are protected against government encroachment/intrusion.
Checks and Balances - GP A system of checks and balances allows each branch to monitor and check the power of the others to prevent any abuse of government power.
Legislative Branch Makes laws and established federal courts.
Judicial Branch Interprets laws and reviews lower-court decisions.
Executive Branch Enforces the laws and negotiates treaties.

Roles of The Constitution The purpose/role of The Constitution is to set of rules and goals for the current and future citizens of the United States of America. It protects our rights and Rule of Law, while establishing the framework for our government.
