TermDefinition
West Africa Squadron: British navy force that aimed to abolish the slave trade in 1807, intercepted ships and freed many of the African Americans being held.
Black belt: area in the deep south with the highest concentration of slaves, became this way due to the cotton demand.
Breakers: slave drivers who employed the lash to “break” strong willed slaves.
Responsorial: . call and response style of preaching that combined African and Christian teachings, practiced by slaves in the South
Nat Turner's rebellion: Virginia slave revolt that resulted in the death of sixty whites and caused panic of further uprising.
Amistad: Spanish slave ship that was seized by the slaves and brought to New England where they were put on Supreme Court trial and eventually became free.
American Colonization Society: reflecting the focus of abolitionism, tried to transport free slaves back to Africa, established Liberia.
Liberia: West African nation established in 1822, safe haven for freed slaves.
An Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World: abolitionist tract that encouraged the violent overthrow of slavery, written by David Walker a southern-born free African American.
The Liberator: Anti Slavery newspaper published by William Lloyd Garrison calling for the emancipation of all slaves.
American Anti-Slavery Society: Abolitionist society founded by William Lloud Garrison, by 1833 it had more than 250,000 members.
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: Autobiography of the renowned escaped slave and abolitionist Frederick Douglass.
Mason-Dixon line: originally surveyed and drawn for borders between states but ended up separating the North-South divide over slavery.
Gag resolution: prohibited debate or action on anti slavery appeals, was eventually overturned by John Quincy Adams after eight years.
Slave narratives: eighteen and nineteenth century slavery accounts written by former slaves.
