APUSH Chapter 21

TermDefinition
Freedmen's Bureau: created to support newly freed slaves by giving them clothing, jobs, education, only could continue administrative help and funding.
10 Percent Reconstruction Plan: Introduced by Lincoln, stated that if 10% of Confederate states voters pledged loyalty to the Union and to honor the emancipation of slavery then they could rejoin the country.
Wade-Davis Bill: passed by congressional republicans in response to the 10% plan that 50% of the state would have to comply, showing difference between radical republicans in congress
Black Codes: laws passed in the South to restrict the right of African Americans especially in labor contracts, angered the North and grew hate for Andrew Jackson leniency.
Civil Rights Bill: passed over Jackson's veto, aimed to counteract the black codes by making freed slaves American citizens and giving them all rights.
Fourteenth Amendment: constitutional amendment that was added to preserve civil rights and make it illegal to take away those rights without due process.
Reconstruction Act: passed by the newly elected congress dividing the South into five military districts and states that the states must ratify the 14th amendment.
Fifteenth amendment: prohibited states from denying citizens the franchise on the account of race. Disappointed feminists because women were not included.
Ex Parte Milligan: Civil war era Supreme Court case stating that military tribunals could not be used to try civilians if civil courts were open.
Redeemers: Southern democrats who wished to reclaim some control from republican regimes.
Women's Loyal League: women's organization aiming to end the civil war and influence congress to prohibit slavery
Union League: reconstruction african american organization who supported newly freed slaves and began building black schools and churches, supported republican party ideals.
Scalags: derogatory term used for pro-union southerners by southern democrats.
Carpetbaggers: pejorative used by southern whites for northern businessmen or politicians that came down to the south to aid in reconstruction.
Ku Klux Klan: an extremist right wing organization who was anti black, foreign, sematic, etc, created during the mid 1800s, revived for a time in the 1920s, many members used violence.
Force Acts: passed following a wave of kkk violence, made it illegal to intimidate or threaten african americans against voting, etc, banned clan membership.
Colfax Massacre: on Easter Sunday a militia of democrats raided a parish in colfax killing 150 freedmen, they were later exonerated by the Supreme court leading to anger and the enforcement of the 14th amendment.
Tenure of Office Act:s. required the president to seek approval from the senate when wanted to remove appointees, Jackson was impeached and almost removed from office by violating thi
Seward’s Folly: popular term of Secretary of State William Seward’s purchase of Alaska from Russia.
