| Loyalists | Those loyal to England |
| Sons of Liberty | Most interested in fighting against British tax acts |
| George Washington | Commander-in-chief of the Continental Army |
| No taxation without representation | Colonists felt they should not be taxed unless they had representatives in parliament |
| Declaration of Independence | Americans declared independence from England |
| Boston Tea Party | Colonists dumped hundreds of chests of tea into the ocean |
| Minutemen | American Patriots who were ready to fight in a minute's notice |
| Revolution | An overthrow of government and change to a new system |
| Newspapers and pamphlets | provided news and information about the war |
| Shot Heard Round the World | Battles of Lexington and Concord |
| Marquis de Lafayette | One of George Washington's most trusted leaders and fighters |
| Treaty of Paris | official agreement signed to end the Revolutionary War |
| Battle of Yorktown | General Cornwallis is surrounded and surrenders |
| France | Allied with the Americans and provided troops, supplies, and aid |
| Native Americans | Sided mostly with the British because they were viewed as less of a threat |
| African Americans | Fought on both sides of the war |
| Southern Colonists | Joined the American side because they did not like being threatened by the British |
