Cultural Heritage The traditions, customs, beliefs, and practices that are passed down through generations within a community. This includes stories, art, and rituals significant to Native American identity.
Ancestry One's family lineage or heritage.
Totem A natural object or animal that serves as a symbol or emblem for a particular group, often representing ancestral lineage or spiritual beliefs
Shaman A spiritual leader or healer in certain Native American cultures who is believed to have the ability to communicate with the spirit world and provide guidance, healing, and rituals for the community
Lakota Referring to one of the three main divisions of the Sioux Nation, the Lakota people have a rich cultural heritage and distinct language.
Wakan Tanka A term meaning "Great Spirit" or "Great Mystery," representing the Sioux belief in a powerful spiritual force that governs the universe.
Sundance significant spiritual ceremony among the Sioux that involves dancing, singing, and rituals to honor the Great Spirit and seek renewal and healing.
Buffalo Jump A traditional hunting technique used by the Sioux to drive buffalo over a cliff as a way to gather food and resources.
Kinship The strong relationships and bonds within a family or community that create a sense of belonging.
Stewardship The careful management and protection of natural resources, showing respect for the land and environment.
Powwow A social gathering where Native American communities, including the Sioux, come together to celebrate through dancing, music, and shared cultural activities.
