| Foreign Policy | a government's strategy in dealing with other nations |
| Isolationism | a policy of remaining apart from the affairs or interests of other groups, especially the political affairs of other countries |
| MAIN (long-term causes of WWI) | militarism, alliance, imperialism, nationalism |
| Central Powers | one of two coalitions fighting in wwI, consisting of the german empire, austria-hungary, the ottoman empire and bulgaria |
| Allied Powers | nations that have joined in alliance to fight wwI (france, great britain, and russia were the major ones) |
| Neutrality | the state of not supporting or helping either side in a conflict -- remaining neutral |
| U-Boats | german submarine used in wwI |
| Unrestricted Submarine Warfare | naval warfare where submarines sink merchant ships without warning |
| Restricted Submarine Warfare | naval warfare where submarines sink merchant ships with warning |
| Propaganda | information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view |
| Lusitania | british ship that the germans sunk without warning because munitions were being carried on board |
| Zimmerman Note | intercepted telegram proposing a german-mexican alliance |
| Selective Service Act | authorized the government to temporarily expand the military via a draft |
| Liberty Bonds | a program where americans loaned money to the government and in return would get the money back plus interest |
| Influenza Epidemic | spanish flu, very deadly illness killing about 50 million people between 1918 & 1920 |

| AEF | a formation of the us armed forces on the western front during wwI |
| Stalemate | situation in which further action or progress by opposing or competing parties seems impossible |
| Tank | vehicle used in wwI that could drive over rocky terrain & the trenches |
| Mustard Gas | chemical warfare agent released into camps causing large blisters in any areas of contact |
| Meuse-Argonne Offensive | major part of the final allied offensive that stretched along the entire western front |
| Chateau-Thierry | one of the first actions of the aef - fought on 7/1/1918 |
| Trench Warfare | type of combat in which the opposing sides attack, counterattack and defend from systems of trenches dug into the ground |
| Western Front | the battlefields and trenches that ran for 700 km from the belgian coast through france to the swiss border |
| Armistice Day | 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month -- germany surrenders |
| 14-Point Plan | an ambitious blueprint by president wilson emphasizing national self-determination - included creation of league of nations |
| League of Nations | worldwide organization with mission of maintaining world peace |
| Treaty of Versailles | peace treaty signed in june 1919 ending the war between germany and most allied powers |
| Woodrow Wilson | president during ww1, goal was to keep america out of the war |
| Archduke Francis Ferdinand | was vacationing with his wife in sarajevo when he was murdered -- reason war started |
