World War 1

QuestionAnswer
Central Powers The alliance made by Austria-Hungary, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire prior to the war.
Triple Entente The military alliance made by France, England, and Russia prior to World War 1.
Militarism The massive buildup of new weapons of war due to industrialization and new inventions.
Alliances The many entangled agreements made in order to prevent war that actually pulled many nations into a war they had no interest in.
Imperialism The period of conquering foreign territory for natural resources and markets that produced many smaller wars and disagreements
Nationalism Pride in your country’s interests and placing them above all others. This as a big movement in the 1800’s in Europe and led to feuds among nations.
Trench warfare Bridges and tunnels connected various lines of trenches as there were interconnected trenches for retreating and moving to lines further back
No Man’s Land - the area between the 2 trenches in which death was very likely due to machine gun fire and artillery. Soldiers were sent “over the top” into battle.
Treaty of Versailles Agreement that blamed Germany for the war and severely punished Germany. Composed by the “Big 4” in France in 1919.
The Fourteen Points Woodrow Wilson’s plan for a lasting peace in the world, created after WWI.
League of Nations International organization proposed in Wilson’s 14 Points and in the Treaty of Versailles, but the US never joined.
Casualty A person killed or wounded during war
Powder Keg/Balkan States Refers to weapons but mean this very tense area in Europe
Self Determination Creating new nations based on ethnic and nationalistic similarities
Demilitarized Zone Land along the Rhine River that a natural barrier between Germany and France though Germany was vulnerable because they couldn't have armed troops there
Kemal Ataturk Established Turkey as a state and replaced Islamic influences with modern and western influences
Mandates When one country takes over governing of another country for the benefit of the people
1917- Balfour Declaration British would support the Jews establishing a state in Palestine
1915- McMahon- Hussein Correspondence British would support Arab independence in Middle Eastern territories if those territories revolted against the Ottoman Empire
Political radicals people who wanted to make extreme changes dreamed of instituting new social and political systems, including Bolshevism (communism)
1915- Sinking of the Lusitania British Cruise boat sailing from New York to England was bombed by a German submarine (U-boat), killing 123 Americans
1917- Zimmerman Telegram USA intercepted a message from Germany to Mexico. Germany promised they would return land from the US to Mexico if Mexico joined the war and supported Germany
