| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Groups | Three or more people connected by interest, relationship, or need |
| Primary groups | Primary relationships within the groups, are caring, intimate, personal, and fulfilling |
| Secondary groups | Usually goal oriented groups, working for a common purpose of the members |
| Reference groups | A group which you compare yourself to |
| Territorial groups | Neighborhoods/communities |
| In groups | Social group you feel loyalty / respect towards |
| Out groups | Not part of the in group, usually hostile towards them |
| Status | The position you hold in any given group you are a member of |
| Ascribed | Assigned to you (sibling, student) |
| Achieved | Status you have earned through your achievements/efforts (boss, high honor roll) |
| Status set | All the statuses a person occupies at any particular time |
| Role performance | The behavior of an individual in a role |
| Role strain | Condition in which the roles of a single status are inconsistent or conflict |
| Role conflict | Condition in which performance of a role in one status interferes the performance of a role in another status |
