musket an old gun that can only be fired once before having to reload
plantation a large farm on which crops are raised by workers who live on the farm
reconstruction the period of when the south rejoined the union
scalawag a slang word for old useless horse, a southerner who helped the renconstruction
secede when one part of a country leaves or breaks off from the rest
sharecropper a system in which landowners let poor farmers use small areas of their land and in return the farmers give the land owner a share of the crop
siege a military blockade on a city or fort compel its surrender
textile cloth or fabric
underground railroad a series of routes and hiding places to help slaves get out of the south
union another name for the united states
