Social Perspectives

TermDefinition
Functionalism The idea that all aspects of society serve a purpose.
Symbolic Interactionism We give meaning to what we see in the world / Meaning is shaped by personal experiences
Conflict Theory Emphasizes conflict, competition, and constraints in society / Looks at disagreements in society

What are the groups and what functions/purposes do they serve? Are there negative influences from any of the groups (dysfunctions)? Functionalism
What are the important symbols? (Symbols might be an object, idea, event, person). How do people act based on symbols they find important? Symbolic Interactionism
Who holds the power? How and why do they hold the power? How do they use their power? Conflict Theory
Social Institutions Mechanisms or patterns of social order focused on... -Meeting social needs -Control individuals with norms (rules) -Establish permanent patterns of social behavior
