What is a republic? A form of government with elected leaders
What is the purpose of the Roman Senate? The senate was a group of 300 men elected to govern Rome, They served for life, They discussed, debated, and voted on laws, They gave advice to the consul, They acted as judges, Only patricians could be in the senate.
What is the purpose of Consuls? The consul was one of the two chief leaders in the Roman Republic, They were elected for 1 year, This short term prevented the consuls from becoming tyrants, They controlled the Roman army, Only patricians could be in the consul.
Conflict of Orders- Struggle between plebeians and patricians
Conflict of Orders-The plebeians fought to get political equality with the patricians.
Conflict of Orders-The plebeians solved the conflict by boycotting and leaving Rome and camping on a nearby hill until they were given more rights.
Conflict of Orders- The patricians finally compromised with the plebeians because work came to a halt and Patricians feared the army would be helpless if an enemy struck
Senate tribune = 10 Plebeians participated in the Senate

3rd Expansion- Who assassinated Julius Caesar? Roman Senate
3rd Expansion-Why did they assassinate him? They thought he would declare himself King and lose their power
3rd Expansion-What happened to Rome after Julius Caesar was assassinated? Civil war broke out; Plebs were resentful because they were forced to serve in the army, pay taxes, and their jobs were given to slaves
4th Expansion-What positive contributions did Augustus make to the Roman empire? Improved trade, Fire Station, Police Station, orphanages, building projects
4th Expansion-Why did Augustus ask the Roman Senate for advice? He didn’t want to be assassinated and to make the Senate think they had power.
What was the Pax Romana? 200 Years of peace and Prosperity
What made it possible? Began with Augustus: He encouraged education, art and literature. He had 80 temples restored and created the first police force, firefighters, and library, improved trade routes, harbors, roads and coins
Caligula mentally unstable declared himself a god made his horse a member of the Senate assassinated by his bodyguards
Claudius returned art stolen by Caligula to citizens granted citizenship to people of empire improved Roman laws
Nero felt threatened by anyone who criticized him murdered family members
Marcus Aurelius lowered taxes sold his own possessions to help ease famine built schools and orphanages promoted kinder treatment of slaves
What led to the decline of Rome? 1. Rome had difficulty transitioning (giving) power to new leaders. Often, civil wars broke out. Armies helped or destroyed leaders in power. Many emperors were weak and dishonest.
What led to the decline of Rome? 2. Citizens had to pay heavy taxes to finance (pay for) Rome’s huge armies. Heavy taxes led many people to poverty and famine.
What led to the decline of Rome? 3. The huge size of the empire was difficult to control. Invaders from the Germanic tribes settled in Rome but had no loyalty to Rome.
