Renewable Resources sun, wind, water, geothermal, and biomass
Crop Rotation the practice of planting different crops sequentially on the same plot of land to improve soil health, optimize nutrients in the soil, and combat pest and weed pressure
Terraces an external, raised, open, flat area in either a landscape (such as a park or garden) near a building, or as a roof terrace on a flat roof
Desertification the process by which vegetation in drylands i.e. arid and semi-arid lands, such as grasslands or shrublands, decreases and eventually disappears
Deforestation the purposeful clearing of forested land
Reforestation The process of replanting trees in areas that have been affected by natural disturbances like wildfires, drought, and insect and disease infestations
Semiarid climate that dry but having slightly more rain than an arid region or climate.
Aqueducts structures used to conduct a water stream across a hollow or valley
Aquifers a geologic formation, a group of formations, or a part of a formation that contains sufficient saturated permeable material to yield significant quantities of water to wells and springs
Desalinization The removal of salt or other chemicals from something, such as seawater or soil
Acid Rain any form of precipitation with acidic components, such as sulfuric or nitric acid that fall to the ground from the atmosphere in wet or dry forms
Global Warming the phenomenon of increasing average air temperatures near Earth's surface over the past one to two centuries
Ogallala Aquifer the largest aquifer in the United States
Smog air pollution that reduces visibility
Ozone Layer a region of high ozone concentration in the stratosphere, 15 to 35 kilometres above Earth's surface
Nonrenewable Resources oil, natural gas, coal, and nuclear energy
Minerals naturally occurring elements or compounds
Metallic Minerals minerals which contain one or more metallic elements in their raw form
Nonmetallic Minerals minerals composed of chemical elements that do not exhibit metallic properties
Fossil Fuels oil, coal and natural gas
Petroleum a complex mixture of hydrocarbons that occur on Earth in liquid, gaseous, or solid form
Refineries convert (refine) crude oil into petroleum products for use as fuels for transportation, heating, paving roads, and generating electricity and as feedstocks for making chemicals
Hydroelectric Power one of the oldest and largest sources of renewable energy, which uses the natural flow of moving water to generate electricity
Geothermal Energy heat energy from the earth
Solar Energy the radiation from the Sun capable of producing heat, causing chemical reactions, or generating electricity
Nuclear Energy the use of sustained nuclear fission to generate heat and electricity
Chernobyl the result of a flawed reactor design that was operated with inadequately trained personnel
Wangari Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977 to plant trees across Kenya, alleviate poverty and end conflict
