Great Depression and New Deal

What is a depression? A depression is when the economy slows down, and people lose jobs and money.
Why were many people in debt in the 1920's? They borrowed money and bought goods on credit.
When people had less money to buy goods, what happened to many factory workers? They lost their jobs.
What happened because people could not pay back their loans to the bank? Many banks closed.
When did the stock market crash? October, 1929
After the stock market crash, was the economy weaker or stronger? Weaker
Who was the U.S. president when the Great Depression began? Herbert Hoover
Why did people blame Hoover for their problems? They thought he did not do enough to help.
During the Depression, what percentage of adults in the U.S. were unemployed? 25%
What served free food to people who needed help during the Depression? Soup kitchens
What state did many people move to in order to find work? California
What were shantytowns called that homeless people built? Hoovervilles
What caused the Dust Bowl on the Great Plains? Farmers dug up the natural plants and there was a drought.
Who was elected president in 1932? Franklin D. Roosevelt
What was the name of Roosevelt's plan to help the American people? The New Deal
What was the main goal of Roosevelt's plan? Create jobs and give money
What was the goal of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)? To provide jobs to young men mostly in parks, forests, and rural areas
What did the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) do? It provided jobs to build dams for flood control and to generate electricity.
What did the Works Progress Administration (WPA) do? It provided jobs to build roads, buildings, bridges, and airports. It also hired artists.
How does the Social Security Act help Americans? It gave money to needy people and old people.
Who was Margaret Mitchell? She was the author of the book Gone with the Wind
Who was Jesse Owens? An African-American track athlete who won 4 gold medals at the 1936 Olympics
Who was Duke Ellington? An African-American composer, pianist, and bandleader who was famous for jazz music
