How did the Renaissance happen? Black death killed 1/3 of pop. and they needed to reform the Catholic church. there we wares between France and england and the fall of the ottomans and byzantine. People began accepting new ideas.
Where did the Renaissance begin and why? Italy because it was the center of trade and urban development and home to the Medici familty
How did the Renaissance values all coincide with one another? They all focused on humans and ones self worth and accoplishments, and not religion.
What society did people aspire to achieve? One that valued education and literature and recognize someone full potential.
Who was the "father of humanism?" Petrarch
Who was Machiavilli? Wrote The Prince which was advice to rulers, and created the philosophy (the end justifies the means). He inspired acts of violence, attacked neighboring territories, and "its better to be feared than loved"
How was the Renaissance society divided? 3 Social Classes: Clergy Nobility (aristcrats) Peasants
Renaissance vs. Mideval Art Renaissance art used techniques like classicism, linear perspective, symmetr, empahsis on indiv. and idealism to show humanism. Midevial Art focused on religion and flat representation.
Themes in Renaissance Art? Everyday life and emotions as well as classicism and realism.
Ideal Renaissance man? Man intelligent in many field; Leonardo de caprio
Northern Renaissance vs. Italian Renaisannse? Northern focused on realism and growth in merchant class, Italian focused on humanism, secularism, and the classics
Who were the Northern Renaissance writer? Erasmus, St. Thoma More, and William shakespeare
Why did people start criticizing the church and when? The 15-16th century because they felt the leaders were too interested in worldly pursuits.
Who was Martin Luther? Revolutionist who wrote the 95 Theses against the Catholic church and indulgences (began reformation) said teaching should be based of the bible, not the pope
Church's response to Martin Luther? Pope excumminicated him and the Edict of Worms named him an outlaw. Fredrick the wise helped him and German Princes protested for him and became the protestants.
The long term consequences of Martin Luthers action? Created a second main branch of Christianity called Protestanism
What invention was critical to the Renaissance and Reformation? The printing press because it helped spread ideas, discoveries, and literacy quicker the ever before
What were the motivations for European explorers? East Asia had become a hot spot for luxury goods and Europeans were looking to trade with China and Japan
Who was Zheng He? Why was he significant to China? explorer. He lead 7 voyages to show chinas power. Many large ships were lead from southeast Asia to eastern Africa. These voyages stopped after he died
Why did Japan enter a policy of isolationism in the 1600s? Europeans turned 300,000 Japanese to Christianity after Japanese was left wear in civil war. Peasant rebelled causing: closed country policy, sealed borders, and one port open to two countries. Lasted 200 yrs.
Why did Europeans want to find alt. routes to Asia? The Japanese lockdown sent them to New World. And wanted wealth, faster routes, fame/glory, and to spread faith (3 G's Gold, Glory, God)
What inventions ensured the Age of Explorations' success? Compass, Astrolabe (chart location w sun) Caravel Ships (stronger in hasher conditions, faster+bigger, hold cargo, closer to shore, cannon + weapons!)
What major problems did Europeans introduce to the Americas? Disease+_illness which led to lots of death. Cities and pop. struggled and deforestation!
How did the Spanish treat the natives? As slaves ig. Formed alliances with them, gave them new resources/tools;animals plant techniques. Also showed them faith + diversity
What was the Columbian exchange? The transfer of plants and animals and diseases between the New World (Americas) and Afro-Eurasia
Describe the journey of the Middle Passage. 10-16 million African forcibly transferred across Atlantic 1500-1900s. @ mil. died and then 15-30% died marching to he coast. Slaves chained together, crammed into tiny spaces, unclean, human waster , no ventilation, deadly conditions.
The journey outlined in the Transatlantic slave trade? 13 mil Africans kidnapped and forced onto European and American ships across Atlantic
What interested Columbus most when he met the Tainos? The gold they had
Why did the Spanish have to give some Tainos to carribean sugar can growth ig
What did John Calvin believe in? Predestination (God determines life and death)
What was the Triangular Trade? America-Europe-Africa-America
Why did Europeans turn to slavery? Native deaths=labor shortage. Africa had easy sail routes and high pop. The slaved demand increased as the Brazils sugar industry did.
Short term consequences of slave trade? Profits and exports increased. Pop. drain, intro to guns, harsher lifestyles, families divided, economical ad cultural development. Led to Porrtugals lack of power and triangle trade
Long term consequences of slave trade? Led to the use of slavery in the Americas and the spread of African culture and teachings.
Who were the European explorers? Henry the Navigator, Vasca de Gama, Colombus, Amerigo Vespucci, Ferdinand Magellan
What were the social classes in Colonial Latin America? Peninsulars (born in Spain) Creoles Mestizos Native American Indians Enslaved ppl
What was she impact of exploration? Brought the world together, spread new culture. Introduced animals/plants. Deforestation and diseas spread.
