Imperialism

Big Stick Policy It allows the United States to extend the Monroe Doctrine to allow them the ability to intervene in Latin America if needed
Expansionism The belief that a country should acquire land beyond its borders and grow in size. The new territories will be added to that country and usually have resources.
Exports Goods or services sent to another country for sale
Foreign Policy A plan that is followed by one country when dealing with other nations (countries)
Imperialism A belief that a stronger nation should control a weaker nation through its economy. They gain control of the economy through diplomacy or military force. The weaker nation does not take on the name of the stronger nation.
Imports Goods or services brought into a country from abroad for sale
Isolationism The belief that a country should stay completely to itself. At times, isolated nations do focus on open trade with other nations. No permanent alliances.
Manifest Destiny A belief by Americans in the 1800’s that the United States was destined to expand west all the way to the Pacific Ocean
Monroe Doctrine It stated that North and South America were no longer open to colonization. It also declared that the United States would not allow European countries to interfere with independent governments in the Americas.
Open Door Policy Issued by the US and stated that all nations had the right to trade with China (end European "Spheres of Influence")
Panama Canal A man made waterway that was built in order to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, making it faster, easier and safer to move both naval warships and ships for trade
Roosevelt Corollary An extension of the Monroe Doctrine that states that the US can intervene in Latin American affairs
Spheres of Influence Areas where another nation has economic and political control
Yellow Journalism To exaggerate and sensationalized stories in order to sell newspapers
