What were the seven causes of the Civil War? Slavery, Expansion, State Rights, Industry vs Farming, Bleeding Kansas, Abraham Lincoln, Secession
What were the border states? Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, West Virginia and Missouri
Who was the leader of the Confederate Army? Robert E. Lee
Who was the leader of the Union Army? Ulysses S. Grant
What role did African Americans play in the Civil War? At first they were not allowed to fight for the North because of border states. Allowed towards the end
What role did children play in the Civil War? Had to be 18, but boys 13-17 lied about ages and fought in the War. Others worked in the camps to help the soldiers.
What role did spies play in the Civil War? Spies passed on all sorts of information regarding the armies of the enemy. They told of troop movements, numbers of soldiers, and the conditions of the enemy army.
In many states, African slaves made up a majority of the population. SOUTH
The economy was based on the production of agricultural goods, especially cotton. SOUTH
The abolitionist movement was born here. NORTH
Leaders in this region believed the federal government was gaining too much power and could limit the rights of the people and the individual states. SOUTH
Used cash crops to produce finished goods in their factories and textile mills. NORTH

In 1859, Congress passed the controversial Fugitive Slave Act. Define this law. Any escaped slaves in the north needed to be returned to the south
Define the Missouri Compromise? Allowed Missouri to be a slave state and outlawed in the north
Describe what a person typically looked like who was part of the abolitionist movement. White Religious Americans
Define abolitionists. People fighting to get rid of slavery
The Southern Economy was based on what? Agriculture
Who invented the Cotton Gin? Eli Whitney
What effect did the cotton gin have on the south? Increased the need for slave labor and plantations
How did the north indirectly benefit from the cotton gin in the south? Factories used cotton to make clothes and other materials
What was the goal of the abolitionist movement? To end slavery in the South
What does Antebellum mean? Before the War
