Grade 7 Colonial Vocabulary Terms

| Apprentice | person who learns a trade or craft from a master |
| Bill of Rights | written list of freedoms that a government promises to protect |
| Gentry | upper class of colonial society |
| Freedom of the press | right of newspapers and other public media to publish articles believed to be accurate. |
| Habeas Corpus | the right not to be held in prison without first being charged with a specific crime, constitutional protection against unlawful imprisonment |
| Divine Right | belief that a ruler’s authority comes directly from God |
| Indentured Servant | person who signs a contract to work for a set number of years in exchange for ocean passage to the colonies. |
| Legislature | part of a government that makes laws |
| Libel | publishing of false statements that unjustly damage a person’s reputation |
| Natural Rights | rights that belong to every human being from birth. |
| Public School | school supported by taxes. |
| Racism | belief that one race is superior or inferior to another. |
| Separation of Powers | principle by which the powers of government are divided among separate branches. |
| Slave Code | one of a group of laws that controlled every aspect of enslaved African Americans’ lives and denied them basic rights. |
| Triangular Trade | three-way colonial trade route between the colonies, the islands of the Caribbean, and Africa. |
