| Term | Definition |

| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
| Temperature | The measure of the energy of motion in the particles of matter, which we feel as how hot or cold. |
| Liquid | The state of matter in which a substance has a definite volume but no definite shape. |
| Volume | The amount of space something takes up. |
| Solid | The state of matter in which a substance has a definite shape and a definite volume. |
| Gas | The state of matter in which a substance does not have a definite shape or volume. |
| Physical change | A change in which the form or shape of a substance changes but the substance still has the same chemical change |
| Reaction | The process in which new substances are formed during a chemical change. |
| Mixture | A combination of two or more different substances in which the substances keep their identities |
| Solution | A mixture that has the same composition throughout because all the parts are mixed evenly |
| Chemical change | A change in one or more substances, caused by a reaction that forms a new and different substance. |
| Solar system | A star all the planets and other objects that revolve around it. |
| Comet | A chunk of rock or iron that orbits the sun |
| Planet | Is a large, round body that revolves around a star |
| Astronomy | The study of objects in space and their properties |
| Galaxy | A group of billions of stars, objects that orbit those stars, gas and dust |
| Star | A huge ball of very hot, glowing gasses in space that produces its own light and heat |
| Asteroids | A chunk of rock or iron that orbits the sun |
| ATM | a machine that allows bank customers to deposit or withdraw money without visitingtheir bank |
| Balance | the current amount of money in an account |
| Bank | a business that offers money related services to its customers including loans and checking and savings accounts |
| Business | a company that sells goods or services |
| Check | a written order to a bank to pay a certain amount of money from a checking account to another person or business |
| Checking account | a bank account used to pay bills and access funds using checks, debit cards, and online payments |
| Credit card | a card that allows the holder to buy goods and services by taking out a bank loan. |
| Credit union | a financial institution owned by its members that provides many of the same services as a bank. |
| Debit card | a card that allows customers to electronically and immediately withdraw funds from their accounts, either in cash or to purchase goods or services. |
| Economy | how a country makes and manages goods, services, and money |
| Financial institution | a business that provides money related services: examples include credit unions, banks, and savings and loans |
| Loan | money borrowed that must be repaid usually with interest |
| Online banking | a service that allows customers to perform banking activities using the internet |
| Savings account | an account that usually earns interest and is often used to hold money that is not needed right away. |
| Transaction | a business agreement or exchange. |
| Band | a group of people of the same tribe who are closely connected |
| Bartering | opportunities for families to make a trade on their own |
| Chiefdom | a group of tribes under one leader |
| Civilization | the society, culture, and way of life of a particular area |
| Confederacies | large group of tribes |
| Petroglyph | a picture carved in a rock used for communication |
| Tribe | a group of people connected by a common language, belief, land, and culture |
| Adobe | a mixture of staw, water, and clay baked into hard bricks |
| Wigwams | small, dome-shaped homes |
| absolute location | exact location; helpful when you're trying to find an unfamiliar place |
| cartographer | creates maps and decides what to include on them |
| climate | the study of weather over time |
| climate map | shows whether a place is usually warm or cold and wet or dry |
| compass rose | a symbol that shows the cardinal directions |
| equator | an imaginary horizontal line that runs around the middle of the world |
| Greenwhich Mean Time | the starting point for time zones |
| hemisphere | a division on Earth between north and south or east and west |
| historical maps | maps that were drawn or printed in the past and are used to show geographical ideas of the times and places in which they were produced |
| latitude | horizontal lines going around the Earth showing how far north and south places are from the Equator |
| longitude | vertical lines going around the Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole on a globe or map |
| physical maps | a map that shows the natural features of an area |
| geography | the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments and how things change over time |
| gulf | a deep inlet of water that connects the coastal areas to a larger body of water, such as a sea or ocean |
| cultural maps | maps that identify community cultures and resources |
| Allegiance | another word for loyalty |
| Amendments | changes made to an official state or national document |
| National Anthem | a song chosen to represent a country and its values |
| Preamble | introduction to the Constitution. |
| Checks and Balances | each branch of the federal, state, and local governments has the power to check on the other two |
| Common Good | when people think about what is best for everyone |
| Equality | all people are treated the same, regardless of who they are |
| Justice | people behave in a way that is fair, equal, and balanced for everyone |
| Popular Sovereignty | the belief that the government must listen to the will of the people, or what the majority of the people want |
| Civial Rights | rights that protect people from the actions of governments organizations, or other people |
| Unalienable rights(natural rights) | rights that people are born with and cannot be taken away, which include life, liberty, and freedom |
| Tax | a percentage of money that a person pays to the government |
| Executive Branch | enforces our country’s laws |
| Judicial Branch | interprets the laws, or decides what they mean |
| Legislative Branch | makes the laws and sets taxes |
| Force | a push or a pull, which may cause a change in an objects motion |
| Friction | a force that acts between two touching objects and that opposes motion |
| Gravity | the force of attraction between two objects, such as the attraction between Earth and objects on it |
| Unbalanced Forces | forces that cause a change in motion because they act on an object and don't cancel each other out |
| Balanced forces |
