Cold War Terms for 2025

| Fallout | Radioactive particles that are released into the atmosphere after a nuclear explosion and that settle to the ground |
| Geopolitical | Relating to the interplay of political and geographical factors, especially in international relations |
| Espionage | The practice of spying or using spies to obtain secret information, especially about a foreign government or a competing company |
| Atolls | A ring-shaped coral reef or a series of such reefs that enclose a lagoon |
| Repercussions | The consequences of an action or event, especially the unwelcome or unpleasant ones |
| Detonated | To explode or cause to explode |
| Contamination | The process of making something impure or poisonous by the introduction of a harmful substance |
| Culminating | To reach a climax or highest point |
| Immense | Extremely large or great |
| Legacy | Something that is passed on from one generation to the next, such as a tradition, a belief, or a physical object |
| Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty 1963 | Prohibited nuclear testing in atmosphere, underwater, and underground |
| Indigenous People | Original inhabitants of a location |
| Marshall Islands | A series of atolls in the South Pacific where the US conducted nuclear tests |
| Operation Crossroads | The first US nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll |
| Geopolitical | Relating to the political relations between countries, especially in terms of their geographical situation and interests |
| Dissolved | To break up or cease to exist; to end a formal relationship or agreement |
| Antagonized | To provoke hostility or anger in someone; to make someone dislike or oppose you |
| Escalation | The act of increasing in intensity or severity; a gradual increase in the seriousness of a conflict or situation |
| Confrontation | A conflict or situation that results from a disagreement. |
| Containment | Official US Policy during the Cold War, our efforts to keep Communism from spreading. |
| Marshall Plan | US plan to help rebuild Europe after WWII. |
| NATO | North Atlantic Treaty Organization, US and our Western European Allies |
| MAD | Mutally Assured Detruction, US policy to have enough weapons to prevent a nuclear war by having everyone lose. |
| First World | US, Western Europe and capitalist countries around the globe. |
| Second World | USSR and it's satellites, along with China and Cuba. |
| Third World | Countries not aligned with US or USSR. |
| Warsaw Pact | USSR and their allies in Eastern Europe |
| Glastnost | USSR policy of openess |
| Perestroika | USSR policy of reforming and restructuring the political system. |
| Iron Curtain | The division in Europe between Eastern (Communist) countries and Western (non-Communist) countries |
| Proxy Wars | Conflicts fought between the allies of the main opposing countries. |
| Capitalism | Economic system with private ownership and private control over decision making. |
| Non-Aligned Countries | Countries tht did not side with either the US or USSR during the Cold War. |
| Deterrence | US Cold War Policy of trying to prevent issues before they occur |
| Cuban Missile Crisis | 1961 Cold War event that brought US and USSR to brink of nuclear war over missiles in Cuba. |
| Collective Defense | An attack on one country is like an attack on all in the alliance |
| Satellite State | A country that is officially independent, but actually controlled/influenced by another country |
| Offensive Posture | Warsaw Pact strategy based upon the threat of aggression |
| Korean War | War between North and South Korea after WWII to unify the country. |
| Armistice | A temporary pause in hostilities between two warring nations |
| General Douglas MacArthur | Commander of UN forces in Korea, fired for not following orders |
| DMZ | Demilitarized Zone, area between North and South Korea where no weapons are allowed |
| Mao | Chinese Communist Leader |
| Harry S | President of US during the Korean War |
| Kim Il Sung | Communist Dictator of North Korea |
| Syngman Rhee | Non-Communist Dictator if South Korea |
| 38th Parallel | Division between North and South Korea |
| Operation Ajax | US/CIA effort to overthrow the democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran in 1953 |
| Nationalize | When government takes over private industry |
| Muhammad Mossadegh | Iranian Prime Minister who was overthrown in 1953 |
| Shah of Iran | Leader reinstalled in Iran by the CIA |
| MAAG | Military Assistance Advisory Group, US advisors sent to Vietnam |
| French Indochina | Vietnam, a French colony in Southeast Asia |
| Ho Chi Minh | Communist leader of North Vietnam |
| Ngo Dinh Diem | Non-communist leader of South Vietnem |
| McCarthyism | The Second Red Scare, where US government went after Communists and possible Communists |
| HUAC | House Un-American Activities Committee |
| Hollywood Ten | 10 Hollywood writers and directors who refused to testify in front of HUAC |
| Blacklist | To be banned from participating in something |
| J Edgar Hoover | Head of the FBI from it’s origin until 1972 |
| Cuban Revolution | 1959 Fidel Castro overthrows F Batista in Cuba |
| Fugenia Batista | Non-Communist Dictator of Cuba |
| Fidel Castro | Communist revolutionary and leader of Cuba |
| CIA | Central Intelligence Agency, US Foreign Intelligence Agency |
