| federalism | system of gov't in which power is divided between the national and state gov't |
| elastic clause | constitutional power that gives congress the authority to make the laws needed to carry out its other responsibilities |
| separation of powers | duties and responsibilities of gov't are divided into 3 separate but co-equal branches- executive, legislative, and judicial |
| checks and balances | each branch of gov't is subject to certain restraints by the other two |
| Impeachment | act of accusing or formally charging with misconduct |
| judicial review | power of the courts to determine whether legislative and executive actions are in accordance with the constitution |
