Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) A civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including employment, transportation, public accommodations, state and local government services, and telecommunications.
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) A federal law that ensures students with disabilities receive a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) tailored to their individual needs.
Mainstreaming Placing students with disabilities in general education classrooms for part of the school day.
Least Restrictive Environment The educational setting that best meets the individual needs of a student with a disability, while still providing access to the general education curriculum.
Individualized Education Plan A legally binding document that outlines the individualized education plan for a student with a disability, including goals, objectives, services, and accommodations.
Section 504 of the Rehab Act A civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance.
Due Process A set of legal procedures that protect the rights of students with disabilities and their families, including the right to be notified of proposed changes to their education, the right to impartial hearings, and the right to appeal decisions.
Attention Deficit Disorder A neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulty sustaining attention, focusing on tasks, and managing impulsivity.
Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder A neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulty sustaining attention, focusing on tasks, and managing impulsivity, often accompanied by hyperactivity.
English Learners (EL students) students require specialized instruction and support to develop their English language skills and access the general education curriculum.
