| overspeculation | when stocks become worth a lot more than the actual value of the company |
| economic depression | when the economy is weak and people lose their jobs |
| drought | a long period of low to no rainfall |
| conservation | protecting the things found in nature |
| TVA, Tennessee Valley Authority | a New Deal program that helped farmers learn better ways to farm and built dams and power plants to bring electricity to a big area. |
| WPA, Works Progress Administration | a New Deal program that gave people jobs building things like roads and schools. It also helped artists and teachers do important work during the Great Depression. |
| CCC, Civilian Conservation Corps | a New Deal program that gave jobs to young men to protect nature. They worked on projects like digging canals, fixing old battlefields, building shelters, and creating parks to help the environment and people. |
| Stock Market Crash of 1929 | the sudden and dramatic decline in stock prices in 1929; led to “bank runs,” bank failures, and the Great Depression. Many Americans lost their savings as a result. |
