charter The authorized grant to organize a new settlement.
burgesses Representatives for colonial governments.
Mayflower Compact A formal document establishing the first civil government in the colonies.
constitution A formal plan of government.
pilgrims A group of separatists who fled religious persecution and created the Mayflower Compact.
puritans Protestant Christians who founded the northern colonies.
persecuted Groups treated harshly for their beliefs or differences. Major reason for immigration to American colonies.
debtors People unable to pay debt started fresh in the colonies by working off their debts.
cash crops Crops that could be sold easily in markets and overseas.
Indentured Servants Laborers who worked without pay for a period to pay for their passage to the colonies.
Charter colony A colony sold by the English monarch to stock holders to make money.
Proprietary colony Privately (individually) owned colonies.
Royal colony Colonies under direct English control.
Great Awakening A religious revival in the American colonies that sparked new thoughts on religious and political freedoms.
French & Indian War War fought over the desirable Ohio River valley between the French and British colonists.
Propaganda Exaggeration of information to persuade or harm involved parties.
Crispus Attucks African American who was killed in the Boston Massacre (The 1st American killed in the BM).
Samuel Adams Radical political activist in the colonies.
John Adams Lawyer for the British soldiers involved in the Boston Massacre.
George Washington Military leader/1st Commander of CC Army/Virginia Delegate/1st U.S President
militia A group of citizen soldiers. Major effect of the 1st Continental Congress.
petition Formal request for change.
Thomas Paine Author of Common Sense/Supporter of American independence from Britain.
Declaration of Independence Formal explanation for the separation of the American colonies from Britain.
Patriots Americans who supported independence.
Loyalists Americans who supported ties with Britain.
