How might the combination of the end of feudalism and the Protestant Reformation contribute to people choosing to leave Europe during this time? The wealthy lose their land, farmers lose jobs, new labor opportunities, people migrate/immigrate, families torn apart, business loss, ECONOMY. Protestant Reformation, religious persecution forces people to migrate / immigrate for religious reasons.
Describe the political and economic effects of slavery on Africa. Altered societies and economies, led to death and destruction, lost of 10s of millions of people, when outlawed empires fell, new consumers goods ruin local manufacturing, etc
Explain why Bacon’s Rebellion was an important step in ending the practice of indentured servitude and adopting the Slave Codes in all British North American colonies? Wealthy men were worried about indentured servants & black people uprising, so they increased slavery and made it a law. (class warfare)
How and why did the movement of ideas and people across the Atlantic contribute to the development of American culture? The Great Awakening contributed to the backlash towards Enlightenment, which emphasized rational thinking over tradition and religious revelation. There was biblical support to overthrow tyranny b/c of New Testament.
What was the purpose of the Federalist Papers? What impact did its publication have on the ratification of the Constitution? Encouraged voters to ratify the Constitutions and outlined the importance of a strong central government. Unknown impact because nobody knows how many people it convinced and the papers also did not change New York's outlook.
Choose ONE of the “Revolutions” discussed in Unit 4 that you think was most important to the expansion of the United States during Westward Expansion. Explain why that revolution was important. Railroads was the most important b/c it made it easier to travel faster and trade, connected states, carried a lot of goods including people, crossed rivers quickly, and led to the advancement of time zones.
Summarize what political passivity is, and why it’s harmful (according to Henry David Thoreau). When people say they are opposed to something, but do nothing about it. This is harmful because bad decisions could easily be made and the government would serve its own interest.
Explain the importance of infrastructure as a military advantage during the Civil War. Be sure to provide one specific example to support your response. Union military was able to cease resources meant for the Confederates that were being transported by railroad & take them for themselves. Gave the Union more resources & made the Confederate army more weak making it easier for Union troops to defeat them
Why do you think it was difficult to agree on a plan for Reconstruction after the Civil War? There was a huge disagreement between the South and the North because the South still did not want to accept blacks into society. The North was unsure of how to let the South back into the Union.
Explain how convict leasing is considered to be another form of slavery in the United States. Free people were able to be randomly convicted and forced into labor with horrific conditions similar to slavery. Prisons were leasing them to private companies b/c of the loop hole in 13th amendment - slavery was legal as a form of punishment
Explain how Staub’s Model of Frustration supports the role of dehumanization in the Jim Crow era. Racist ideology was created and spread due to frustration (as listed in the stages), leading to the majority of the white population dehumanizing another group of people in the Jim Crow Era
