Middle Ages Vocabulary cards

Feudalism A social system of relationships in medieval Europe between lords and vassals
Lord A person with authority in the European feudal system, especially someone who distributes or gives land in return for goods and/or services
Vassal A person with lesser power or authority in the European feudal system, especially someone who receives land with the expectation of providing goods and/or services in return
Knights A medieval warrior serving his lord, usually on horseback and wearing armor
Fief A plot of land provided by a lord to a vassal in exchange for goods and/or services.
Magna Carta Translates to "Great Charter" a document given to King John in England by rebellious lords in 1215 CE
Crusades A series of military expeditions launched by Europeans in an attempt to recover control of the Holy Land from the Muslims in the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries
Islam The religion of the Muslims, a monotheistic faith
Plague A contagious bacterial disease characterized by fever and delirium, typically with the formation of buboes and sometimes infection of the lungs
Persecution A group of people being treated poorly and unfairly because of their beliefs
