Civics Chapter 1 Vocabulary from Civics in Practice

alien permanent residents of the United States who are citizens of another country.
citizen a legally recognized member of a country.
civics The study of Citizenship and government.
government the organization that exercises political authority over others.
ideal a firm belief one tries to live up to.
immigrant people who move from one country to another to live.
quota a specific number of a set group, number of people allowed to immigrate from each country.
refugee people who flee their home country from persecution.
native-born citizen person born within their home countries borders, including affiliated territories. (Constitution does not provide a definitive answer.)
deport sending an alien back to their home country as punishment.
naturalization the legal process by which aliens become citizens.
census official counting of the population, every 10 years in US.
birthrate annual number of live births per 1,000 members of a population.
death rate annual number of deaths per 1,000 members of a population.
rural area farmland, country areas.
urban area cities.
suburb areas surrounding cities, considered outside of city limits.
metropolitan area cities and surrounding areas, usually defined areas.
migration movement of people within a nations borders.
Sunbelt Southern states within the United States, many people have moved their recently.
Rust Belt Northern states in East and Midwest, have been losing population.
