Mesopotamia Vocab

| Agriculture | farming of crops and raising of animals |
| Irrigation | Moving fresh water to be used for farming or drinking |
| Fertile | An area with soil that is good for agriculture |
| Civilization | A society with cities, a government, different jobs, and different levels of power (like Queen, warrior, priest, farmer) |
| Natural Resources | materials found in nature that are used by living things |
| Drought | A long period of time with little precipitation (rain or snow) |
| Plow | A tool used to cut, lift, and turn over soil. Used to make ground ready for planting crops |
| Cuneiform | A form of writing developed in Mesopotamia using a wedge shaped stylus and clay tablets. |
| Social Hierarchy | a ranking of people into higher or lower positions of respect and power |
| Surplus | Having more of something than you need to survive |
| Division of Labor | When people in a group have different jobs. Everyone becomes skilled at their job and can get more done. |
| Polytheism | The belief in more than one god |
| Ziggurat | A pyramid shaped temple found in Mesopotamian cities |
| Scribe | A person in Mesopotamia whose job was to write |
| Monotheism | The belief in only one god |
| Empire | A bunch of cities in Mesopotamia conquered (taken over) and ruled by an Emperor (a very powerful king) |
| Hammurabi's Code | the first written collection of laws in the world |
| Fertile Crescent | An area in the Middle East where agriculture first developed 7,000 years ago |
| River Valley | A flat area of fertile land surrounding a river |
| Culture | Beliefs, customs, and traditions of a group of people. |
