What are the plains? Flat lands that are central to North America
How did the peoples of the Plains get food? Some people farmed and grew crops, while others hunted bison.
What part of the bison did the Plains peoples use? They used every part of the bison, including the hide, hair, horns, bones, and dung
How did people of different Plains nations communicate with one another? They used sign language to communicate
How did the Plains peoples organize themselves? Some peoples organized into tribes, while others organized into large nations
Why did some Plains tribes live in teepees while others lived in earth lodges? (#1) Teepees benefitted nomadic people because they were easy to build, take down, and carry.
Why did some Plains tribes live in teepees while others lived in earth lodges? (#2) Earth lodges were built by people that wanted to settle/stay. They were built with wooden beams and walls of earth and prairie grass. They were built to hold up to 20 people
What does the existence of trading networks tell you about the peoples of the Great Plains as well as other Indigenous groups? It shows that they were able to trade various goods, religions, culture and language
What body of water did the most of the Plains groups share? The Missouri River
What was one very important item that was traded? What did it symbolize? One very important item that was traded was the calumet. It symbolized peace agreements between different groups
What training did boys in Plains societies receive as they grew up? (#1) The boys learned about glory, justice, and honorable behavior through stories and traditions passed on.
What training did boys in Plains societies receive as they grew up? (#2) The boys learned to play with bows and arrows, handle horses and hunt with grown men.
What training did boys in Plains societies receive as they grew up? (#3) The boys had to go through an initiation rite to enter into manhood.
How did Plains women support their household and community? They gathered plants, grew crops, were responsible for moving camping grounds, turning hides into teepees and clothes. Girls also had a ritual to enter into adulthood.
Describe clans of the Plains people Clans were based on family relationships. The Plains people could trace their ancestors through their mother or father. Clans stayed the same.
Describe bands of the Plains people Bands worked together for a shared goal. Bands could change with people joining and leaving.
Why was the relationship between the children and grandparents special? The relationship was special because the children and grandparents could joke around, play pranks, and make fun of each other.
What were the qualifications to be a chief? Chiefs needed to be brave, smart, and capable. If they were unsatisfactory, they could be replaced by a chief from a different family.
What type of religion did nearly all the Plains peoples share? Animism
What is the vision quest? This is when someone went into the wilderness and would not eat or drink for several days. They believed this would help gain guidance from spirits.
What is the Sun Dance? This is when people would perform ritualistic dances while being pierced with needles, or skewers. They believed this would gain spiritual power or insight.
What are shamans? They are religious leaders who can talk to spirits.
How did they use sweat lodges? Shaman used these for religious ceremonies. They would pour hot water on stones to make them steam. They used it to purify bodies by making them sweat.
What is a war bonnette? It is a headwear decorated with eagle feathers. Men wore it to show off brave deeds or actions.
When were war bonnettes worn? They were only worn for special occasions and important ceremonies.
Why did warriors "count coups" instead of killing enemies? They cared more about showing courage than killing. They would want to touch or poke the enemy with coupstick. The more they could touch, the more skilled they were.
How did they feel about the 4 cardinal directions? They saw the four directions (north, south, east, west) as sacred/holy.
