1776 Declaration of Independence signed, colonies break from Britain
1783 Treaty of Paris signed, ends American Revolution
1787 Constitutional Convention meets in Philadelphia, writes framework of government that is still in use today
1793 Proclamation of Neutrality is issued, signals basic element in America's foreign policy for the next 150 years
1800 Thomas Jefferson is elected president, (democratic republican)
1803 Louisiana Purchase, doubles size of US
1812 War of 1812 begins , another war for independence against British
1815 War of 1812 ends
1819 Panic of 1819, first of many that happen ~20 years apart
1820 Missouri Compromise is signed, shows unity and willingness to agree between North and South
1823 Monroe Doctrine issued, another element of American foreign policy (control of western hemisphere)
1828 Election of Andrew Jackson, democratization of politics
1830s Peak of 2nd Great Awakening, sparked numerous social reform movements
1844 Election of James K. Polk, "Manifest Destiny" president
1846 Mexican American War begins, shows America's willingness to go to war over control of North America
1848 1st event Mexican American War ends, US acquires "Mexican Cession" (includes California) with Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo
1848 2nd event Seneca Falls Convention, beginning of women's rights movements in US
1850 Compromise of 1850 signed into law, shows North and South willingness to preserve the Union one last time
1854 Kansas-Nebraska Act passed, Republican Party was created due to outrage over the act and the events of "Bleeding Kansas" begin
1861 Civil War begins, sectional tensions between North and South have grown too strong
1865 Civil War end with Union victory, ends slavery, and "Reconstruction" begins
1877 Reconstruction ends, Redeemer Democrats take back control of South
1890 Sherman Antitrust Act signed into law, shows a new concern in American life- the growth of massive corporations
1896 Election between William McKinley (Republican) and William Jennings Bryan (Democrat/Populist), McKinley win- less restrictions on big business
