What network did the Mound Builders make and how far did they stretch? The Mound Builders made a network of roads and trade routes that extended from the east (Mississippi Valley) to the west (Pacific Ocean)
How did the Mound Builders get their name and what jobs did they have? The Mound Builders got their names by building mounds, and they worked as farmers and traders.
What were the mounds used for? Historians believe that mounds were built for rituals and burials, but we may never know because the information was lost.
What did the descendants of the Mound Builders eventually become? They became different nations, the Creek Confederacy being one of them.
What important geographical features affected the nations of the Southeast (positively)? There was an abundance of resources that helped the Southeast people, like access to trees, rivers, animals, and mild weather that was great for extending growing seasons
How were the Catawba different from the peoples of the Creek Confederacy? The Catawba spoke a Siouan language.
Why did the Catawba use palisades? The Catawba used palisades to protect them from raids.
What was each nation divided into and what were they named after? Each nation was divided into clans and they were named after animals
What sport did the Cherokee play? What were the 3 benefits to playing? #1 The Cherokee played stickball. One benefit to playing was simply for fun.
What were the 3 benefits to playing? #2 Another benefit to playing was that it would prepare children for adult life.
What were the 3 benefits to playing? #3 The last benefit to playing was that it could be used to settle disagreements between villages without violence.
What was the difference between the red and white communities of the Southeast nations’ towns? The red communities were in charge of war, while the white communities were in charge of peace.
What kind of houses did families have? How were the houses built? They had rectangular houses that were built cool for the summer months and built warmly for winter months.
Generally, what were the spiritual beliefs of the Creek Confederacy and the Southeast People? The spiritual belief was that supernatural beings and spirits were in the Earth, the sky, and below the ground.
What did Creeks believe about souls (not spirits) The Creeks believed that the universal spirit was separate from an individual's soul that could exist after death, without a body.
What were ceremonies generally tied to? Ceremonies were generally tied to agricultural activities.
What was an important ceremony shared by most Southeastern people? The Green Corn ceremony was a midsummer busk (time of fast). It ended in a large feast
What was an important part of the midsummer rituals? An important part of the rituals was forgiving of all crimes except murder.
What did Southeast Native Americans wear (men and women)? Men generally wore loincloths and women wore long skirts.
What was special about the Cherokee? A man named Sequoyah from the Cherokee nation developed an alphabet that was later used to create a language.
What is important about the Cherokee language? The Cherokee language is important because it still exists today.
