Writing the Constitution

| Constitution | a document with a basic set of principles and laws that states the powers and duties of a government |
| Articles of Confederation | the first written form of US government that said Congress would become the single branch of national government, but would have limited powers in order to protect liberties of the people |
| Daniel Shays | a farmer fed up with taxes and heavy debt who led a rebellion and forced a shutdown of the supreme court in Springfield, Mass |
| James Madison | attended and took detailed notes at the Constitutional Convention; "Father of the Constitution" |
| Legislative branch | Congress - makes the laws |
| Executive branch | President and his cabinet - enforces the laws |
| Judicial branch | Federal courts - interprets the laws |
| Compromise | Come to an agreement where each side gives up something they want |
| Ratify | officially approve or pass |
| Bill of Rights | first ten amendments to protect essential freedoms |
| Popular sovereignty | people are the primary source of the government's authority |
| Federalism | Division of power between the federal government and the states |
| Republicanism | citizens elect representatives who carry out their will |
| Roger Sherman | from Connecticut who wrote the Great Compromise |
| Three-Fifths Compromise | 3/5 of a state's slave population would count towards their representation |
