Declaration of Independence Declaration of Independence, in U.S. history, document that was approved by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, and that announced the separation of 13 North American British colonies from Great Britain
Democracy government in which the supreme power is held by the people and used by them directly or indirectly through representation.
Stamp Act an act of the British Parliament in 1765 that exacted revenue from the American colonies by imposing a stamp duty on newspapers and legal and commercial documents.
Intolerable Acts The Intolerable Acts closed down Boston Harbor, made trials in the colonies difficult, and allowed English soldiers to invade colonists' homes.
Boston Tea Party is an American political and mercantile protest on December 16,1773 by the sons of liberty in Boston in colonial Massachusetts
The Colonies The American colonies were the British colonies that were established during the 17th and early 18th centuries in what is now a part of the eastern United States
