| expansion | Extending the nation beyond its existing borders |
| Foreign Policy | A nation's overall plan for dealing with other nations' issues |
| Domestic Policy | A nation's overall plan for dealing with their own issues |
| Manifest Destiny (1840s and 1850s) | Belief that the United States was destined by God to spread its "empire of liberty" across North America. |
| Transcontinental Railroad | Railroad connecting the west and east coasts of the continental US |
| Sioux Wars | clashes between the Sioux Indians and white men (U.S. Army). |
| Chief Joseph | Leader of Nez Perce. |
| Nez Perce | Native American Tribe that will flee capture from U.S. Troops, who almost make it to Canada. |
| reservations (Native people) | Areas of federal land set aside for Native Americans |
| Dawes Act | 1887 law which gave all Native American males 160 acres to farm and also set up schools to make Native American children more like other Americans |
| Indian Reorganization Act 1934 | *Reversed the Dawes Act *Attempted to restore the tribal basis of Native American life *Tribal life was to be recognized as "normal" |
| imperialism | A strong nation seeks to dominate other countries politically, socially, and economically. |
| Theodore Roosevelt | 26th president, known for: conservationism, Panama Canal, and the Great White Fleet. |
| Spanish American War | In 1898, a conflict between the United States and Spain, in which the U.S. supported the Cubans' fight for independence |
| Yellow Journalism | type of sensational, biased, and often false reporting for the sake of attracting readers |
| USS Maine | Ship that explodes off the coast of Cuba in Havana harbor and helps contribute to the start of the Spanish-American War |
| Annexation of Hawaii (1898) | Another act of American imperialism, this one instigated mainly by American sugar plantation owners. |
| open door policy | proposed by the US in 1899, under which ALL nations would have equal opportunities to trade in China. |
| Monroe Doctrine | An American foreign policy opposing interference in the Western hemisphere from outside powers. |
| Roosevelt Corollary | the United States has the right to protect its economic interests in South And Central America by using military force |
| Panama Canal | A canal that crosses the isthmus of Panama connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. |
| Latin America | Spanish or Portuguese-speaking nations south of the U.S. |
