French revolution

| 1. Guillotine | A machine used for executing people by cutting off their heads, especially during the French Revolution. |
| 2. Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen | A document from 1789 that stated the rights and freedoms everyone should have, like equality and liberty. |
| 3. Estates-General | A meeting of representatives from three groups in France: the clergy, the nobility, and the common people, called by the king to discuss problems in the country. |
| 4. First Estate | The group made up of the clergy (church leaders) in France, who had special privileges and did not pay many taxes. |
| 5. Second Estate | The group made up of the nobility (wealthy landowners and aristocrats) in France, who also had special privileges and paid few taxes |
| 6. Third Estate | The largest group in France, made up of common people like peasants, workers, and the middle class, who paid most of the taxes and had little power. |
| 7. National Assembly | A group formed by the representatives of the Third Estate in 1789, who decided to create a new government and write a constitution for France. |
| 8. Tennis Court Oath | A vow taken by members of the Third Estate in 1789, promising not to stop meeting until they had written a new constitution for France. |
