The "New Immigrants" to America

What does it mean to assimilate? To become part of the American culture.
What does it mean to emigrate? To leave one's homeland and to go somewhere else to live.
What is an Ethnic Group? Minority groups that spoke different languages and followed different customs from the majority of the people.
What is a Nativist? People who opposed immigration.
What is Steerage? was the cramped and noisy quarters on the lower decks of ships where immigrants who could only afford the cheapest tickets traveled.
What is a Sweatshop? Dark and crowded places where many immigrant women and children worked long hours in repetitious and hazardous conditions for low pay.
Which groups of immigrants began arriving in the mid 1880's? Southern and Eastern Europeans
