| Revolution of 1800 | An event that refers to Thomas Jefferson's election in 1800 in which the government would become more democratic |
| John Marshall | A Federalist and the Chief Justice in the Supreme Court; increased the power of the federal government |
| Marbury vs. Madison | A court case in which judicial review was used for the first time |
| Judicial Review | The process in which the Judicial Branch declares a law to be unconstitutional |
| Barbary Pirates | A group of pirates from North Africa that demanded a bribe from America in exchange for the safe us of the Mediterranean Sea |
| Tribute | A payment to a larger nation for safe passage through something or protection |
| Embargo Act | A law passed by Thomas Jefferson that banned all trade with foreign nations; later Jefferson realized it was a mistake and made him very unpopular |
| Lewis and Clark | A duo of explorers that explored the Louisiana Territory to find a Northwest Passage; they also made peaceful contacts with natives, and they documented the plant and animal life of the area |
| Louisiana Purchase | The area of land the U.S. bought from France in 1803 that went from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains |
| Missouri River | A river that Lewis and Clark followed as they explored the Louisiana Territory |
| Sacagawea | A Native American guide that assisted Lewis and Clark by acting as an interpreter for other Natives |
| Impressment | The act of forcing sailors to serve in another country's navy against their will |
| Tecumseh | A Native American leader that had dreams of forming a confederacy of tribes that would stop the U.S. from expanding westward |
| Tippecanoe | A battle fought between William Henry Harrison and Tecumseh's forces that ended Tecumseh's dream of the confederacy; fought near Prophetstown |
| William Henry Harrison | A general in the War of 1812 that became a hero for defeating Tecumseh at Tippecanoe and the Battle of Thames |
| Thomas Jefferson | The 3rd President of the United States that doubled the size of the United States |
| Treaty of Ghent | An agreement that officially ended the War of 1812; allowed America and Great Britain to gain nothing from the war |
| War of 1812 | A war between America and Great Britain; started because Americans were tired of British impressment and because Congressmen wanted land in Canada |
| Fort McHenry | An American victory at Baltimore; the Star - Spangled - Banner was written as a result of this battle |
| Thames River | A battle in which William Henry Harrison defeated Tecumseh fro the last time; fought in Canada after the Battle of Lake Erie |
| Horseshoe Bend | A battle fought in Alabama when Andrew Jackson defeated the Creek Nation; Secured millions of acres of Creek Land for American settlement |

| Andrew Jackson | A Tennessean General that became famous for defeating the Creek at Horseshoe Bend and and defeating the British at New Orleans |

| Battle of New Orleans | The last battle of the War of 1812; a resounding victory for the U.S.; made Andrew Jackson a national hero |
| Washington D.C. | The Capital city of the United States that was burned down during the War of 1812 |
| Hartford Convention | A meeting of the Federalists towards the end of the War of 1812 |
| Convention of 1818 | An agreement in which the British and the Americans agreed to set the U.S. - Canada Border at the 49th paralell |
| Adams' Onis Treaty | A deal between the U.S. and Spain that ceded Florida to the U.S. |
| John Quincy Adams | A Secretary of State that worked out the Convention for 1818 and the Adams' Onis Treaty |
| Era of Good Feelings | A time period following the War of 1812 in which there was only one political party and there was a feeling of unity and nationalism in America |
| James Monroe | The 5th President of the United States; in office during the Era of Good Feelings |
| Monroe Doctrine | A speech to Europe that said the western hemisphere was off limits to colonization; the U.S. would protect Latin America |
