closed primary an election in which registered members of a political party vote for candidates who will represent their party in a later general election
coalition
conservative a political viewpoint that believes in limiting the role of government in people's lives
county committee
crossover voting when members of one party vote for candidates of another party in an open primary. This is legal in only a few states.
grass roots
independent voter person who votes for the candidates they believe will do the best job, regardless of party label
lame-duck period
left wing a strongly liberal political viewpoint. Often referred to as socialistic or communistic.
liberal a political viewpoint that supports the greater use of government as a means of achieving social progress
minority party the political party that receives less than half the votes in an election
moderate a middle-of-the-road viewpoint held by people who generally support the present political system and who oppose extreme political measures
national committee
nominating convention a meeting of delegates whose job is to select the party's candidates for an upcoming election
open primary an election held to select candidates for a later general election that is open to all voters, regardless of their party membership
party caucus
patronage a public official's power to hand out jobs, building contracts, and other favors to party supporters
platform a political party's listing of what it stands for and what it will attempt to do if its candidates are elected
political machine a group of people who control a city or state government as a means of serving their own self interests
political party an organization of people who join together to achieve their common political goals by electing candidates who share their views
precinct a political subdivision of a town or city, set up primarily for election purposes
presidential preference primary an election in which each party'[s voters select the presidential candidate their state delegates will support at the national nominating convention
pressure group a group organized to lobby for the passage of legislation favorable to its members
primary an election in which members of a political party choose their party's candidates for the coming general election
radical a political viewpoint that supports extreme or revolutionary changes in the existing system of government
reactionary a right-wing political viewpoint that rejects most forms of government interference in the lives of its people
right wing a strongly conservative political viewpoint. Extremists are often referred to as reactionary or fascist
split-ticket voting when voters support some of their own party's candidates while also voting for candidates from other parties

third party any political party other than the two major parties
ward a political subdivision found in some cities, set up primarily for election purposes
