Bureaucracy A system of government with many departments and bureaus led by appointed officials
Merit system A system in which people are hired and promoted based on talents and skills, rather then wealth or social status
Khan the title of a ruler of a Mongol clan
Tribute A payment or gift to a more powerful country
Kami A holy being that represents a spirit of nature, sacred place, ancestor, or clan in Japanese culture.
Regent someone who governs a country in the name of a ruler who is unstable to rule, often because of age
Shogun Supreme military commander
daimyo Local land-owning lords
Samurai highly trained warriors (means "those who serve")
Bushido The strict code of conduct that guided samurai behavior (means "the way of the warrior")
Shinto the traditional religion of Japan (means "the way of the gods")
Mantra A sacred word, chant , or sound that is repeated over and over to advance one's spiritual growth.
