Medieval The term that describes the period in western European history often referred to and known as the Middle Ages.
Middle ages The period between the collapse of the Roman Empire and the Renaissance in western European history.
Feudalism The political system of the local government that is established on the giving of land in exchange for loyalty, military assistance, and other services.
Fief The giving of land from a lord to their vassal.
Vassal A person given land by their lord in exchange for their services.
Manorialism The economic system used during the Middle Ages based on the self sufficient farming of estates where citizens like peasants and lords shared the land.
Serfs Peasants who were bound, and had to stay in the same place, wherever they worked for a lord.
Chivalry The code of conduct that dictated a knights behavior towards others.
Abbot The head of a monastery who controls and distributes properties.
Heretic People who denied the truth of the official church principals that preached beliefs that weren't approved by the church themselves.
Tithe Church tax collected by the christians in early times that represented a tenth of their income. It later became a gift to the church.
Common law Law based upon a judges decision and customs rather than written codes.
Magna Carta A great English charter that made law the supreme power and became a cornerstone of constitutional government
Crusades A long series of wars between Christians and Muslims in Southwest Asia
Pilgrimage A journey to a sacred place
Holy land The region of present-day Israel includes the city of Jerusalem, which is a holy city to Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.
King Person in charge of a kingdom; highest rank in a feudalism
Lord/Noble in a feudal society , one who owned land given to him by the king in return for his loyalty
Vassal/knight granted use of land by lords, and in exchange to protect the land.
Peasants they were the farmers who paid about half of their income in taxes to the nobles, the church and other agents of the king
