French and Indian War (Seven Years' War) -1754 to 1763 -caused by English encroachment onto French lands -most Natives sided with the French -Great Britain wins, France is removed from North America
diplomatic the profession, activity, or skill of managing international relations.
economy the wealth and resources of a country or region
mercantilism GB=Mother Country-economic policy that is designed to maximize the exports and minimize the imports for an economy
salutary neglect (1688-1763) An English policy of not strictly enforcing laws in its colonies
Zenger Trial Established the principle that truthful statements about public officials could not be prosecuted as libel.
Albany of Plan of Union proposal by Benjamin Franklin to create one government for the 13 colonies
Proclamation of 1763 law forbidding English colonists to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains
Quartering Act Law that required colonists to feed and shelter British troops
Stamp Act 1765; law that taxed printed goods, including: playing cards, documents, newspapers, etc.
boycott A refusal to buy or use goods and services.
Tea Act A British tax on tea (Colonists most popular drink) resulting in the Boston Tea Party (protest).
Coercive Acts (Intolerable Acts) 4 British Acts meant to punish Massachusetts for the destruction of 3 shiploads of tea. Acts led to open rebellion in the northern colonies.
Boston Massacre British guards at the Boston Customs House opened fire on a crowd killing five Americans
Patriot American colonist who favored American independence
loyalist American colonists who remained loyal to Britain and opposed the war for independence
Lexington and Concord the first battle of the American Revolution (April 19, 1775)
enlightenment a movement that emphasized science and reason as guides to help see the world more clearly
Common Sense A pamphlet written by Thomas Paine that claimed the colonies had a right to be an independent nation
Continental Congress A meeting of representatives of the British colonies
Declaration of Independence Signed in 1776 by US revolutionaries; it declared the United States as a free state.
Iroquois a confederacy of 5 tribes originally inhabiting the northern part of New York state
guerilla warfare fighting in which soldiers use hit-and-run attacks against the enemy
Battle of Saratoga Turning point of the American Revolution. Convinced the French to give the U.S. military support.
Treaty of Paris 1783 Treaty Between England and the Colonies , formally ended the American Revolutionary War
Committee of Correspondence system of communications between patriots and colonies
